Change Database values using MS Access (JDE E1 Oracle)

For people who have problems with SQL, there’s an easier way of changing backend database values. How about using MS Access where you can directly type in the values, and it gets updated or you can Insert, Update Delete & you can export, import…. and all.

So here it goes for setting up MS Access with Oracle Database Backend for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. (I’ve put the screen shots for my EnterpriseOne 9.0 Standalone Client.)

  1. You will need to have Oracle OBDC drivers installed for using MS Access or any other similar software (Even MS Excel etc) to use.
    • The download link for the same – http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/odbc/index.html
    • Download ODBC Driver version 10.2.0.2.0 , and Extract it to C:\ of your hard disk.
    • Finally you will have the Drivers at “C:\ORA10202″
    • Now let’s install these drivers using the Oracle Universal Installer. You can get to this using the Programs Menu as shown in screen shot below.
      OracleUniversalInstaller
    • Once you start the Universal Installer, Click NEXT.
    • Select the Products.xml from the folder you have extracted – C:\ORA10202\Disk1\stage\products.xml, and then Click NEXT. … Continue reading Change Database values using MS Access (JDE E1 Oracle)

Convert Julian Date to Gregorian Date (SQL)

One of the very usual things Developers and Functional people do for analysis and data confirmations is using SQL.

Database Queries have been a very integral part of every technical consultant to check data, and do simple queries like getting count of rows, trying to join tables, check the Execution plan of a JDE Report i.e. SQL generated by the Report so as to optimize it etc.

A problem with SQL over JDE Data is the way Dates are stored in JD Edwards. JDE stores dates in Julian Format. The following SQL snippet can convert the Julian date into Gregorian Date format or Normal date.

19 + SUBSTR( DATEVAL , 1, 1 )
|| SUBSTR(DATEVAL, 2,2)
|| '/'
|| TO_CHAR( to_date( SUBSTR( DATEVAL, 4, 3 ) , 'DDD') , 'MM' )
|| '/'
|| TO_CHAR( to_date( SUBSTR(DATEVAL, 4, 3 ) , 'DDD') , 'DD' )

where DATEVAL is the date you would like to use. The output is in YYYY-MM-DD format.

You can get your database administrator to convert the above SQL snippet into a Function say FNJULTODATE(dateparam), where dateparam would be the date you want to convert, and viola… you have your SQL displaying Gregorian dates

A different solution exists for Excel spread sheets. You can use the following formula to convert Julian dates to Gregorian date.

=DATE(1900+INT($CELLVALUE$/1000),1,MOD($CELLVALUE$,1000))

where $CELLVALUE$ is your cell/column you need to convert

Hope this helps all

What is your Public Image?

What is a public/social image? One that is created by your personality (labels you display while using attire, cells, jewellery, books you read and talk about, social causes you support etc. etc and etc.), or the one others create for you (media as in colleagues, friends, bosses, relatives, in short your peer group, whether at home or outside), or is it YOU?

Thinking PenseurIn the fast-forward world of our times, to a large extent you would say the first two options mentioned above are conducive to making a public image for you. What you wear, how you talk, are you a haute couture follower or a Nike-sporting sports person, do you dance the Samba or the Bharat Natyam, do you Rock or are you Classically Hindustani? What others who don’t know you talk about you, when your back is turned (is a result of your behavior nay personality most often than not), what your attitude communicates to the bosses (when some work is assigned to you), what the relatives make out of you (when they try to take advantage of you and you let them or maybe resist with spunk)?

Yes you are right, the first two options are more at play where a public image is concerned. Do YOU still have a chance to influence your public image? Your personality lends some attributes to your public image, albeit superficial, as they only induce people to think what kind of person you might be. The contributions made by your peers, family, colleagues, bosses to your public image are more lasting and can either be extremely beneficial or detrimental.

Attitude StatueYOU can still make a difference, because it is YOU who controls your behavior, choices, it is YOU who builds a personality. In the second case, YOU have limited control, because YOU can influence the people around you through your attitude and reaction (towards work, people, situations etc.) and still lose out, if somebody hates your guts. This is a people skill area, not always to be a winning bet! However, your sincerity towards your work, people and situations ALWAYS can and will speak volumes to people. If one person spoils your public image out of malice, or maybe you have induced him / her to spoil it due to your ATTITUDE in the past, all is still not lost. Drop the ATTITUDE and win ten more people who will vouch for YOU against that one person.
